Native American Vessel

Description}: Turned from pistachio burl, I wanted this vessel to have a Native American theme featuring a turquoise threaded lid and a arrowhead finial hand carved from ebony. The top is purple hart with a threaded ebony rim. This vessel first started out as a bowl and then altered to it's final shape. It is mounted to a black metal stand that I designed and fabricated just for this piece. It Measures 6-1/2" tall X 7-1/2" wide and 4" deep

Amboyna Burl Vessel

Description}: It's been a while since I posted anything. So, here is a vessel that I turned recently from amboyna burl. It features a cocobolo threaded rim and inlay band. The threaded lid is turned from the same amboyna burl with an ebony and stainless handle. Measuring 6" tall X 8" diameter it is finished with mineral oil and beeswax.

Wormy spalted maple

Description}: This is a stacked ring vessel using purple hart & birch. I came up with the idea for a raindrop finial using the same material as the base. I plan on using this style finial on future pieces. It measures 5-1/2" dia X 6" tall

Description}: This box was turned from a piece of firewood I have had for several years. It is spalted maple with an ebony finial. It measures 3-1/2" dia X 5-1/2" tall. Finished with lacquer and Mylands wax polish. Some of the holes were filled with casting resin that I mixed with gold pigment.

Ash HF

Description}: This is a two piece HF from green ash I turned over the weekend. I rough turned the outside with a tenon on each end. Then it was parted, with each piece hollowed and then glued back together. I turned the beads to hide the glue joint and then painted with flat black enamel. The ash was left unfinished. Once it drys I will final sand and finish. It measures 8" X 5"

Description}: This vase was supposed to be much larger but due to severe warpage when drying it's half the hight. 8" tall X 6" dia with watco oil and Beall buffed. The wall thickness finished at 1/6"

Cube C&T

Description}: Materials are Canarywood,Curly maple,ebony venier and is 3" square. There are a total of 4 cubes with the smallest being 1/2" . This was accomplished by boring 3 different diameters at exact depths on each surface. I had to use drops of CA glue on the corners of the small cube to make sure it stayed in place.

Special Lathe Stand

Description}: This is a very long story but I'll keep it short.Back in the fall a very close friend informed me about his father purchacing a Jet lathe and tools. 2 years ago his father was paralized when he fell off scaffolding helping Rick build his house. Rick asked if I could help get his dad started turning. Well, I knew I had some major ergonomic issues to work out and if I didn't get it right he could lose interest quickly. Rick brought him over this past weekend to try it out.I helped him rough turn and sand Canarywood and Ambrosia maple then added some Watco oil to see instant results.Rick said thats all he talks about now! I am currently shortening his tool handles and hopefully he will be turning soon.

C&T Platter

Description}: Curly maple platter measuring 8"dia X 3/4" thick. The center is dished out with gold leaf and I added a textured ring with flat black enamel then finished off the platter with shellac. The base is a mallee burl scrap piece also shot with flat black enamel and lacquered with a brass rod holding things together. I used shellac on the platter because I turned it while demoing for our club at the anual woodworkers show, its not as bad as lacquer indoors.

Description}: I know! I know! another stack ring vessel. This is the result of 2 experiments that crossed paths in the shop. I was messing around with another stack ring vessel and turning some cobs I got across the road after harvesting last week. Never turned them and thought I'd try it. Well I turned one and as I was looking at it I saw the stack ring on the bench and the rest is history! Materials - bloodwood, canary wood, curly maple, dyed corn cob finial and copper. Dimensions are 7" dia X 9-1/2" tall. One coat of sanding sealer and Beall buffed.

Longworth Chuck

Description}: I finally got around to making the Longworth chuck! I wanted to make one for my Delta Midi first to see how it would work. It is 9-1/2" dia with 3/4" mdf, 1/4" baltic birch and Teknatool replacement rubber tips from Woodcraft Supply.I am impressed at how smooth and accurate it is. The only thing I have to add are the 4 finger holes to tighten.It is very easy to make and I plan on making one for the big lathe soon!

Soap Stone Sphere

Description}: This is a 4" sphere I turned from soap stone about a year ago. If you haven't turned this stuff, it comes of the piece dusty and cold. Not sure, but I believe it may be the same stuff talcum powder comes from. It also has small mineral deposits that you have to work around that can chip out leaving small pits.

Description}: This cherry ladle measures 13" long and 1" diameter at end of handle. The surface was textured with a dremel and burr. I used black enamel paint on the outside and finished with lacquer. Decorative piece only!

Description}: I was able to turn this long bead by feeding it into a brass tube. I made a 3/16" beading tool from a file that cuts 3 beads per pass.
