Summer 2014 Cube Challenge & Trade

Description}: I started with a 4 1/2" cube of black walnut with the intent of making a hollow form. As I approached my final wall thickness I had some checks appear in the end grain faces, either from the heat generated while cutting or simply from the end grain drying too suddenly when it got thin. I decided to inlay some disks of contrasting woods to cover the checks. The inlay pieces are white ash, honey locust and maple.

First piece from new lathe

Description}: Soft maple platter 12.5" square. I had originally prepared and mounted this blank on to my old lathe and then discovered that the diagonal of a 12.5" square is more than 16" so it wouldn't turn over the bed. I set the blank aside and waited until the new lathe arrived to turn it. :)

Maple goblet

Description}: This is my entry for the Fall C&T. It is made from hard maple with a finish of Shellawax Cream friction polish. The goblet stands 10 1/2" tall and has a diameter of 2". The stem is 7 1/4" long and tapers from 3/16" at the bottom to 1/8" at the top. There are 3 captive rings which nest on the base when the goblet is upright.

Spring 2009 C&T- Maple box

Description}: This one is hard maple with just a trace of spalting. About 2 3/4" by 4 3/4". A little bit of texturing on the lid and some decoration on the inside top and bottom. Finish is Shellawax cream followed by the Beall buff. Hope you like it, Leo!

Description}: The bigger one in the back (~8" long)is sycamore with a red oak lid that I turned a while back. The five small ones (2 ash & walnut, 3 bird's eye maple & walnut) I turned yesterday. They are all about 5" long.

Clewes style box

Description}: Finally got the finish on the box I turned for my article on making a Clewes style box. The body of the box is Ailanthus (Tree of Heaven) and the lid is black walnut. About 8" long, 3" wide and 3" in overall height. Finish is 3 coats of danish oil followed by the Beall buff system. Dip platters

Description}: Three red oak dip platters made from a section of plank that I believe used to be the seat of a church pew. There was a split near one end of the board so I cut that blank along the split and glued in a walnut section. Platters are about 10 1/2" in diameter and 1 1/2" high.

Cube Challenge: Walnut & butternut

Description}: Glued up a cube from walnut and butternut. Turned it on the bias to produce the bowl. Attempted to incorporate the parted off waste section into the lid and originally had a 2" maple bias turned cube as the finial, but it looked way too top heavy. Cut off the maple finial and made this walnut one with the square section to maintain the "theme", but I still think it looks too top heavy. I made another lid but I think I went too far in the other direction with it, as it looks too flat and plain to me. Partner will get both lids and can decide for themself. :)

Description}: I roughed this one out last fall and really didn't expect it would survive, so I was very pleased with the way it turned out. I even managed to keep that little twig intact. :) About 9"x8 1/2" by 4 1/2" high.

Description}: Fairly large (for me) salad bowl form from Manitoba Maple. That's box elder in the US. :) A little bit of birdseye figure and just a trace of red on the rim. About 12" in diameter and 4" high. Finish is the Beall buff system, so just carnauba wax.

English walnut with textured rim

Description}: Picked up some bowl blanks at a wood show today so I turned this one after I got home. First time I have tried english walnut. It turns very well. I used the texturing tool to decorate the rim. About 6 3/4" by 2 1/4".

Description}: I turned this one on a recess rather than a tenon. I used one of the finer cutters on the texturing tool and I don't like the result as well as the first bowl. Still won't throw it away. :)

Description}: I turned this on on a tenon and then reverse mounted it to turn off the tenon. I used the coarse texturing cutter on the Sorby texturing tool for the ring.
