It's about 14" tall and 9" at the widest girth. It's mainly curly maple with a triple helix of purple heart. The finial is an egg shaped piece of purple heart on a maple base. I turned this as a commission piece for a retirement present for one of Kate's co-workers. I gave it a thin coat of sanding sealer and took it to the Beal buffs. The baseball is just to give it some scale. There are no extra queens and it's a real drag when you promote a pawn while you still have your original queen in play. You have to find some object to stand in for the second queen. Usually we turn a rook upside down if any are available. Now we don't have to with this extra queen. The one on the left is the original queen, the one on the right is the new one I turned. Now to make one for the white side! Now she's expecting much sooner. LOL. I spent some time today at the lathe and ended up with this captured ring baby rattle. It's butternut wood, sanded to 220, and buffed on the Beall Buffing system. The rings were interesting to buff, after a little monkeying around, I found a great system of buffing them and it went pretty quickly. No other finish is applied. In person, it's really smooth and shiny. The camera wasn't feeling like capturing the essence of the piece and this is the best photo I could get without digging out the SLR. The wood is Mountain Mahogony. The wood splinters very, very easily. I had to rough it out with the toe of the skew, taking very light passes. Turning down to the proper diameter was also challenging, as the wood wanted to chip out with any cut other than a light scrape from the skew or a finishing cut from the skew. The big knot in the wood was a tad loose, so I filled with CA to be on the safe side. I sanded to 400, used 0000 steel wool to buf out the small scratches and then let the Beal Buffs handle the rest. Hope you like it Don! :)

1 comment http://www.woodturnersresource.com/wrphotopost/showphoto.php?photo=4346&title=americana-fountain-pen&cat=500 http://www.woodturnersresource.com/wrphotopost/showphoto.php?photo=4346&title=americana-fountain-pen&cat=500 Fri, 30 Mar 2007 02:04:15 +0000 Closed Bowl

by: WinsorWoods

Description}: This is the collaborative bowl that Larry (Yakima Turnings) and I turned last Saturday. After weeks of practicing on small things, getting used to the tools, and developing the confidence I needed to take on this bigger piece, I finally decided that today was "The Day." I marked the center of the slab, drew the largest circle that would fit, rough cut it on the bandsaw, and mounted the faceplate. I set the lathe at 450, the lowest mine goes, and started to take careful passes with my new bowl gouge. The bowl is 9.5 Inches in Diameter, about 3 inches tall, and the walls are about 1/4 inch thick. I sanded it down to 220 grit with the right angle drill and the 5 inch sanding disc. It's finished with the Beal bowl buffs, so I guess the technical finish is carnuba wax. It's the first bowl that I have made, from start to finish, which I feel completely proud of. I can't think of anything that I would change. Woohoo! This has been a great turning week for me. It feels like all this persistence is finally coming together all at once.
