Description}: Here is a batch of BBBs I completed for a box show at the Dunn Gallery in Hawaii. The #5 box on the right was the piece I turned at the gathering at Tom's house a week ago last Wednesday. The white finials are holly and the black ones are African black wood.

Baltic birch plywood bottle stoppers

Description}: Hi all, Here are a couple of photos of some bottle stoppers I made recently. They are made from Baltic birch plywood (you know those scraps you have sitting around you don’t want to throw away because you might use them someday. I finally used some.). I glued them together and cut them apart and glue back together several times to get different patterns from the layers. They are dyed with a water based fabric dye I bought at my local art supply store. The finish is multiple coats of Krylon Crystal Clear Gloss spray, lightly sanding between every couple of coats. The stoppers are from Ruth Niles. Thanks for looking. ~ Paul

Salt and Pepper mills

Description}: Here are some salt and pepper mills with real billiard ball tops. The wood bodies are made from curly maple (#7 & #15) and madrone (#13). They are ten inches tall. To fit the billiard ball, I drilled a one inch hole about a half inch deep and epoxied a hard maple tenon in to attach the drive plate.

My folks urns

Description}: I made these urns at the request of my parents. I lost my mom in December of 07 and my dad in January of this year. Both urns are made from mesquite with desert ironwood accents. The short fat urn is my dads with an carved ironwood bear attached to the lid. The bear has a fish in his mouth. My dad loved to fish. I think he had more fishing tackle than most sporting good stores. I bought the bear in a Mexican imports store. This urn is about 12 or 13 inches in diameter and eight or nine inches tall. The wood came from a tree being taken out to widen a street in Phoenix. The tall urn is my mothers. The colored bead in the finial represents one of her favorite colors. It is eight or nine inches in diameter and about 12 inches tall. The wood for this urn came from a relatives ranch in Wickenburg, Arizona. This photo was taken by a professional photographer. I traded a hollow form for the photos. As always, all comments welcome.

African Sumac natural edge hollow form

Description}: African Sumac natural edge hollow form finished with Danish oil and buffed with the Beall system. African Sumac is one of my favorite turning woods. It is an ugly pink/gray after you finish turning it and turns a beautiful red/brown with exposer to sun light. The sap wood stays a light yellow color for great contrast between the sap and heart woods. And sometimes I get lucky and it has the nice burl figure in the sap wood like this piece. Size: 11.25"D x 9.25"H. All comments welcome

Billiard Ball Boxes

Description}: I haven't posted here in a while so I thought I'd show you what I've been up to lately, besides getting into trouble. I got this wild hair the other day (well maybe a couple of months ago) to make snap-lid style boxes from billiard balls. I bought several sets off of eBay for cheap. They are regulation 2.25" dia. balls made from phenolic resin. This stuff is hard on your tools. I was constantly sharpening. I used a cup chuck to hold the ball while hollowing. The 5 ball has a black acrylic finial, the 8 ball has a holly finial and the 10 ball has an African Blackwood finial. Thanks to Jeff Lavine for his great tutorial for making snap-lid boxes. The article was in the winter 2005 edition of Woodturning Design. As usual, all comments welcome.

Ash hollow forms

Description}: I received a call back in March or April from a local farming family to turn some keep-sake pieces from ash trees that grew in the front yard of their old house. The house has been torn down and the property sold and redeveloped. Here are three of the nine pieces I?ve turned so far including four salad bowls and five hollow forms. This has been a fun project. The largest piece is 12?D x 7?H. with a desert ironwood collar. The piece on the left/front is 7.25"D x 4"H and the form on the right/front is 7.25"D x 4"H with a desert ironwood collar. All comments welcome.

Ash with Copper leaf and green patina

Description}: This is my first experiment with with copper leaf and green patina. The patina was a little different to work with compared to stained glass work. It took awhile for it to dye the copper green. I sprayed it with a couple coats of Krylon Kristal Clear Acrylic and finished it off with Krylon Matt Finish, sanded with 600 grit to smooth it out. 4.5"H x 8"D

African Sumac with a Desert Ironwood collar

Description}: This seems real gratuitous to be nominating my own piece, but what the heck. This piece is about 13" by 7". African Sumac is grown around here (Phx/AZ) as a landscape tree. It's color changes from a pale pink/gray when turned to the red/orange/brown with exposure to sun light. It has good chatoyance as well.
