first salt/pepper mills

Description}: This was my first attempt at salt and pepper mills. I had two laminates made up (can't remember what they were originally for), so I cut them on diaginal, reguled them and then squared them. I also had the mechanisms laying around for the last year and never had gotten too them. 7 inches by 2 inchs. Laminate of maple, cherry and one of the mahogony like woods. Finished with one coat of salad bowl finish and buffed with wax. This was a major learning experience.

Three wood Goblet

Description}: Okay, so I didn?t quite meet the goal here. Anyway...the goblet is laminated Maple, Walnut and Cherry. It stands exactly 6 inches tall by caliper. Bowl is 2.5 inches in diameter. Stem is well; it depends on where you say it starts. The thin part is 3 inches, but with the beads etc it is somewhere between 3.5 and 4.5. Diameter is just under ? inch. I didn?t have the time for another go, so didn?t push it and it was already giving a good bit of whip. And, the 5 captive rings were annoying the snot out of me while trying to turn the stem and were just trying to make me slip up with the gouge. This picture is before the first coat of finish. I knew it wouldn?t be dry for a picture.

Description}: This is a coaster and stopper, my wife had me make for a charity auction. Quilted maple, finished with wax. The stopper came from the offcut so the grain matches.

Description}: This was my first attempt at any type of "production" work. My wife wanted legs for our nightstand to raise it up to go with our new bed. They are laminated red oak scraps, 5 inches high. My wife then stained them and the nightstand (which was natural red oak as well).

Description}: My idea was a small flower vase, with the holes for additional stems that you could see through the sides. Made of cherry, walnut and maple. The pens demonstrate the effect. It is 4X4. Plan is to sand and finish with salad bowl oil. Appologies for the picture quality, life getting in the way again :)

Description}: This is the bowl I put a hole in last month. Thanks for the help. The bottom plug is red oak. Finished with 2 coats of Danish oil then buffed. 8X3. It was pretty fun to do, not that I like the reason I had to do it! :)

Walnut with inclusion

Description}: This was a peice of walnut given too me by a mill in Kansas. I almost through it out because of all the piths and the inclusions. When I tried to core some smaller bowls, they just broke in half because of the inclusion that ran through the middle. I ended up with this, and tossed it on my pile of drying bowls and forgot about it...giving it up for sure to split and crack. Shape was pretty much detiremined by the voids and cracks in the original peice. pulled it out last week and finish turned it. Finished it with oil and buffed it today. 11 X 4 inches.

Description}: Another one that has been drying about a year. 8 X 3. It had a long strait side, don't know why I decided to add a curve. Pretty wood though. Not finished, still on tenon. Has one coat of oil, once I get another couple of coats I will turn the bottom. Don't usually finish it this way, just turn it all then wipe on oil, but thought I would try something new.

Description}: Here is my latest segmented box. Through a series of oopses, I ended up with a lid whose lip goes on the inside instead of the typical suction fit, but it seems to work. Sanded to 600 grit. Buffed with carnuba wax.

First textured rim

Description}: Another from Kansas. I took a wire wheel and my drill to it. Sides were relatively strait when I rough turned them and I kept it that way. Finish is danish oil. Same light ring like the other two photos, no clue what caused it. Was in a hurry and used the flash on the kitchen counter.

Description}: Another bowl from when I lived in Kansas and first got going. A local lumber mill sold me a large walnut slab that was wet and this came from it. Finished with danish oil.

Description}: I got into the shop and decided to finish turn some bowls I did when I first started turning. The left is sweet gum and the right is ash. Finished with Danish oil.The rings around the bottom are some trick of the light, not there in real life. I'll figure out photography one day.

Description}: These are made from rubberwood, and are my first attempts. I started to decorate them, but ran out of time. The plan was for #1 to add a third stripe in red. #2 color in the blocks and #3 was going to get burned spirals up the length.

Description}: Okay, the front is rubberwood, two walnut and the back is cherry. I took me three tries to get the soft chuck right, and I still need to do a new one if I am going to do very many more. After the first one they go relatively fast. My daughter likes them, but likes the thinner ones better.

two more boxes

Description}: These were two boxes similiar to the first challenge peice. The right is purpleheart and maple 3.5 X 4. The other is ?wood and maple 4 X 3.5. I have really taken to the "ripple" on the top. I tried a little different shape with each. I think the one Phil got came out nicer than these. Finished with sanding sealer and friction polish. The bottom photo "squished" some when I shrank it, kind of like one of those trick mirrors.

Description}: I got into the shop today (yah!) and this is what came out with me. My daughter came up with the design. Ends are purpleheart. Diamond is cocobolo, other design in bloodwood and the spacers maple. Total is 194 peices and approx. 4 inches in diameter.

Description}: Doesn't look much different. Sanded, three coats of danis oil. My kitchen light and flash played havoc with the picture. Interesting thing is how much darker the maple plugs got. I assume it is because it is endgrain and picked up more oil. It took a LONGGGGGG time to get the glue out from between the segments. Big lesson learned there I assure you.

Description}: Bubinga and maple. 8 x 1 1/2 (oops got bigger than I thought). The rim has 3/8th inch maple "dots" I was originally going to burn in trails behind the dots to the bubinga "swirls" for a comet tail like effect, thinking it would extend the swirls out onto the rim, but took it under the advisment of several people that the simple look of this was better, and I must agree. Of course, the dots were set along the line of the maple swirl in order to accept that effect...that is why they are not in the middle of the segments. It still needs a good bit of sanding, as well as clean up between the segments and there is no finish on it at this point.

putumuju and ebony pen

Description}: This pen was drilled, glued and milled about a year ago, but one end was crushed in my last move. I turned off the end and took a peice of ebony that was laying in my scrap bin, drilled, milled and glued it on. Though it looks like it in the photo,there is not a ridge there at the join. Sanded thgough 400 grit, then mylands sanding sealer and friction polish.

"Walnut Top" Vessel

Description}: I had two ideas for "locking mechanisms" but just flat didn't have time to do them, then I saw chris's top demo, and thought that it would make a great "top" and having never turned a top before that is what I decided. Held on by gravity (or perhaps you could say illusion). The top does work. I will add full discription later...have to go to work. It is made from figured maple,lepardwood (I think), a walnut veneer, purpleheart veneer and a walnut top. The top section was gently depressed to accept the bottom of the top so it would sit flush. Prior to attachment to the main body it was hollowed on the inside to match the inside of the vessel. My intention was to give the illusion that the top was a finial that you would use to open the lid (top laminate) but get a suprise when the "top" came off. Inside is finished with danish oil. The outside is finished with sealer and buffed with carnuba wax. Top was sealed, then buffed.

challenge project

Description}: My project: Happy and sad (or alternatively Comedy and Tragedy) Six alternating maple and ? wood found in a cut off bin. I will post a pic of some if anyone can identify it. Measures 4 inches tall by 3.25 inches wide. The rings consist of six pieces each. They were glued up and a mistake ring was used between rings 4 and 5 to make the lip for the lid so that no height would be lost between segments. What makes this new: It is my first lidded box. While it is my third segmented piece, it is the first that I actually planned and didn't just throw together from scraps. It is also the first time I made rings (for the top and bottom) that form a completely closed disc. It was the first time I used deft on a turning. Why the name: Two reasons. First, purely out of coincidence, the grain markings on two maple wedges in the third ring that just happen to be dead opposite each other have the appearance of a smile on one and a frown on the other. I could not have planned that! It also fits my turning of this, ecstatic one moment at some new accomplishment and then depressed the next when I screwed it up. Things I learned: 1) I don't like deft on turnings, or at least not this one. There were no drips, but I could feel the roughness, and after using steel wool I just didn't like it, so buffed it off. Which leads to the next lesson, deft is a pain to remove. 2) There are screws at the bottom of the waste block, so it isn't a good idea to use that part for a jam chuck! 3) Chris's method of turning the lip for the top works really well, however 4) Deft on the lip makes the top really tight 5) Buffing the lip does affect the fit. It had a great fit with a nice pop until I accidentally defted it and then had to buff it. It still fits really well, but not as good as I would like. 6) Your dog and kids sneaking up on you while at the lathe is a bad thing. 7) Tight bond II is really good glue. I accidentally glued a ring on in the wrong alignment and had to band saw it off. On a good note, it gave me a waste ring to make the lip for the lid out of. I will not routinely do that with any segmented box I do in the future. 8) A waste block on the top and bottom of this kind of turning works well and give a place for the tailstock to hold without digging into the segmented work. 9) Finish the top before parting off the last of the wasteblock. I should have paid better attention to Chris's boxturning instructions.

kid's ornaments

Description}: Every year we get each child an ornament. Each child has a "theme"...my oldest gets angels, my son toys and my youngest daughter snowmen. This year my wife wanted me to make their ornaments (on short notice I might add:smile:), and this is what I came up with. The middle is a "toy" it looks like a character from one of my sons games. I cut a second shot of the angel to get a side shot of the wings.

Description}: These were a couple of quickes my wife had me do for family members, but since some of us were looking and discussing cork vs crome bottle stoppers I thought I would toss these up. They are maple wine coasters, 5.25 inches in diameter and 2.25 inches deep, finished with danish oil. The stoppers are from the offcuts from the coasters finished with friction polish.

second seg bowl

Description}: This is my second segmented attempt from scraps around the shop, and it served as my first practice with hollowing tools as well. It is 4 inches tall and 3.5 at it's widest. The opening is 2.5 and the bottom about .85 inches. Wall thickness is 1/8 until the bottom where it gets to about 1/4 at dead center. The top and bottom are red oak, the white is spalted laural oak from a branch from the front yard and then walnut and paduk. The proportions aren't quite right but it was fun. Chris, you said make it look like an egg:)

Description}: I had a scrap of wood that a friend gave me a while back, and had not tried a square bowl,so figured what the heck. I had no idea how to go about it, so I just made it square on my tablesaw, mounted it and turned it leaving the edges square. If someone has a better way let me know. It is 5 x 1.75. My wife was not impressed, but the kids like it.

first segmented bowl

Description}: This is my first attempt, pretty much a random pattern that my kids picked. I was more interested in seeing if I could get the joints and glue up to work. It is 10.5 inchs in diameter, a little over 4.5 tall and strait sided. This one my wife took and has made it a fall fruit bowl.
