Description}: Here it is! It only took two weeks to find my round tuit. Cedar, 265mm tall, 90mm bowl having an ave. wall thickness of 1.5mm and 150mm X 4mm stem.

Description}: If you like OR myrtle wood then you'll like this bowl. It was in one of the prettiest chunks of myrtle I've seen in awhile. I have four more blanks from the same plank=lucky me. It's about 13" x 4" & finished w/three coats of wipe-on poly.

Mtn Mahogany

Description}: Robo & Scotty hauled a truckload of mtn mahogany from NV a couple of months ago. Scotty dropped off two nice logs so I thought I'd drag one out & cut on it. A good thing I did, that's where my round tuit was. here's a t'pick holder/candlestick of that load. Mighty nice wood, that. It looks to be Cercocarpus montanus. no finish, just burnished wood

Description}: That darn round tuit was still layin' on the bench next to this dryer'n a bone chunk of myrtle. This piece is just down the trunk from the 1st one. I didn't bounce this one around the shop so it's about 12" x 4". I like the look of limb knots but they're not the easiest things to turn. Finishing dry myrtle w/limb knots is an experience every turner should have... There are cracks in one knot so the walls are about 3/16"--I didn't wanta lose the knot. Wife says it's "pretty." whadaya think?

Description}: I went to the shed to get the weed whacker when somethin' caught my eye. It was my round tuit peekin' out from under my gloves. So much for the weed whacker. I turned this myrtle bowl w/bark inclusions. It's about 10" x 3.5" w/a coat of wipeon poly. kinda nice wood I also relearned a lesson. Midi chucks are not ment to hold large blanks. I launched this bowl 4 times & tearing up the bottom & side each time. The blank started out bein' 4" x 12". What w/bouncin' around the shop 4 times it ended up bein' a bit smaller. Oh well...

Mtn Mahogany end grain box

Description}: I made this for an older lady who comes to the cancer office where my wife volunteers. She wanted a, "pretty, air-tight, vessel" in which to store one of her many medications. To make it air-tight I put an "o" ring in the top's lip. She also wanted it easy to open hence the large handle. Mtn Mahogany is pretty wood. It's also my favorite wood to turn. The pith tends to check badly but that's wood for ya. It's about 5" in dia. x 7" high. It has no finish other than burnishing.

Description}: Our C&T was a bit of a fiasco. Tom sent five blanks one of which was to be for his pen; it blew up. It was poorly poured. So I chose a very nice walnut burl blank, spun it round, and began assembly. The kit he sent was missing two parts. I e-mailed Tom, told him what had happened, and offered him a choice. This is what he picked. It's Mountain Mahogany made with a discontinued, Woodcraft,Classic American,kit. I figured for all the trouble I'd throw in a pencil as well.

Description}: This was not easy to turn. Usually maple turns quite nicely but this piece was a pain. It's 19" x 2.25". The glass bowl is a sundae bowl from the late 40s-early 50s. The finish is three coats of salad bowl finish. I was gonna enter it in the "utilitarian" thing on the AAW site but...

Description}: It's alive, it's alive! My creation moves! 24 hours after turning, my wife's friend now has a pitcher bowl. It's always a joy to me to see what happens when ya turn'um green & thin. Oh, the wood: It's not walnut, it's not boxelder, it's not chestnut, I don't know what it is but I have a bunch of it.

English walnut bowl

Description}: Wife wanted s little candy dish to give to a friend so I found the round tuit under some shavings. Then I found a piece of very wet English walnut. An hr & 20 min. later, she had her bowl. Kind of a pretty little bowl (5" x 3".) It's already beginnin' to change shape. It's thin enough so it shouldn't crack.

Myrtle & gold

Description}: A nice, little (6" x 3"), myrtle, burl, pot. This one has a mosaic (8kt-10kt, the package said), goldleaf, rim. The gold is, in reality, almost the same color as the pot. I "added" contrast to make it stand out a bit. It's kinda cool.

Description}: This is kind of a "nothin'" bowl but the wood is amazing. It's piece of true, above-ground (30'), burl. I had to turn it carefully and not too thin (3/8"+) to keep from tearing up the bark inclusions. It's about 12" x 3" & not finished as yet. There is a foot under it--'bout 1/2".

Description}: This is the first, two-piece, hollow form that ever I made. It's of OR Myrtle, about 9" x 8", and finished w/Antique Oil. It's interesting by virtue of an optical illusion. Look intently @ the black line and you'll see an OI of a bowl inside the pot. This is one of Arleen's "keepers."

Bubinga Box w/pagoda cover

Description}: You remember the little,bubinga, salt cellar for which I was gonna make a spoon? CIP! I thought it'd look great w/a pagoda-style cover, so I turned one today & put an ebonized finial on it. It's not too bad if I do say so myself. Oh, I don't spend much time w/photos. I might take a better on later. The finial kinda gets lost in the background. I have a correction: It's bubinga--oh well...

Description}: A nice, little, 3" x 3" (including finial), box. You'll note the brass finial: It was turned by me on my lathe w/wood turning tools. It started life as a 2" x 1/2" soft brass rod. I trust you'll like it, Jo.

Description}: Here's another piece of "Tank" Cypress, renamed Stinkin' Cypress. This piece has a stench that's not at all pleasant. The look of the wood almost negates the stench; it's pretty wood. It's about 4.5" x 2" w/Brewax.

Sandelwood NE

Description}: Here's another piece that S. GA fella sent to me. He had sandelwood written on the end--sure smelled like sandelwood when I turned it. It's spalted but most of the spalting was in the "punky" sap wood so most of it was turned away. Very pretty wood. It's 5.5" x 5" x 2" and has violin finish on it--just one coat applied as friction polish.

"whoda thought" bowl

Description}: Several months ago Yak came down for a visit & ta teach me a few things. He brought along a few pieces of wood. One was a non-descript, light-colored, cracked, mis-sawn, 1/2 a log. "it's walnut," says he. I'm thinkin', "Yeah, sure, Yak." I'm thinkin' some light, blah, wood. Well, folks, ya can't tell by the outside of a blank. This is what was in that "ugly" hunk a wood. Some of the prettiest walnut I've seen for awhile. The blank was a 1/2" thicker on one side so I turned it that way. It's almost 5" in dia. x 3 1/4" on the high side x 2 3/4" on the low side. Two coats of violin finish made it look rather nicely.

Description}: Not to be out-done by G.I. Joe... Several months, or was it years, ago a well-known S. GA turner sent me a box of wood several pieces of which I had no idea of what to turn. This is one such. It turned out to be a small, NE, bowl of about 4.25" x 3.5" x 2". It's finished w/violin finish. It didn't turn out too badly but, then, mulberry is pretty wood; a plank of the stuff would look good.

Description}: I had this old maple cap (burl) layin' around so I turned a bowl. "Everybody" turns nat. edge bowls; I did't. "Everybody" tries to get the inside profile to conform to the outside profile; I didn't. "Everybody" centers the hollow portion so he gets nice, even, wall thickness; I didn't. "Everybody" puts some kind of artificial finish on their bowl; I didn't. Darn, I had fun!

Description}: Lads & ladies: I haven't turned a pen/pencil in over a year. I get a call from a friend who needs a B'day gift for the F-I-L. Can I make a pen & pencil set for him so he can pick it up tonight? Why not? I had some discontinued Woodcraft kits. I look through'um and find 2, WC Gold, Classic American, kits. I look through my umpteen blanks a find 2, fantastic, maple, blanks. There ya go. I had a heck of a time; read, turn, read, turn, read, assemble--well, you get the idea. At least I got'um done and they're not too bad. He's happy, I'm happy...

Grecian style cup

Description}: Here's a little (5" x 3") cup of my favorite wood--Mtn Mahogany (Cercocarpus betuloides). It has natural piercing. This was a test piece in a way. I haven't been turning much so I tried the "one tool" thing. This was turned from roughing to final form w/a 1/2", round nose, scraper. However I did sand it but it has no other finish. It woulda been about an 1" taller had I not had a major "catch." The "catch" was bad enough that it took a chunk outa the piece & broke my 12" tool rest. I am not a fan of cast iron tool rest mounting shafts. It'll have a steel shaft in about 2 hrs.

Description}: Jim, Here's that chunk of mesquite. I've learned 2 things about mesquite: 1. the sapwood is no fun to turn & 2. the heartwood is great turning & very pretty. The bowl is about 9" x 5.5" & finished w/Watco natural.

Mulberry goblet

Description}: It seems "everybody" is turnin' goblets; I've never turned a "real" goblet. I went out to the shop and saw this narly piece of mulberry a well-known S. GA turner sent to me. So I says to meself, "meself, says I, I believe there's a goblet in that mulberry." Darned if there wasn't It's about 6" high x 2.5". I just waxed it (bee's wax cut w/alky.) "everybody" seems to like thin walls; how about just over 1 mm?

Description}: I had this 9.75 x 4" myrtle pot turned b4 my recent Lathe problem." The lathe spun it well enough for finish sanding & Watco oil. Kinda nice--wish I had a better (heavier) hollowing tool.
