Upright # 2

Description}: I haven’t turned the lathe on for over 6 months so a bit rusty. This is a follow on from an earlier piece titled “Upright” A lidded hollow vessel in NZ Rimu, the two side sections are carved and fixed to a black corian leg. The vessel is again fixed to the leg via a couple of rose head copper nails cut down. Thought I would add a lid & finial to give a bit more lift & a point of difference. O/all height is about 220mm, or a bit under 9”. Any comments or thoughts are welcomed Pete

Rimu burnout

Description}: A piece of very old heart Rimu, hollowed out pretty thin, some crack, filled them with CA, it turned black, so, out with the pyro gear & have a burnout. Size is about 5" x 6" high Any comments welcome

Donut Bowl

Description}: Dont do a lot of bowls, but this is one I entered in our Easter Show,(plain bowls under 10" section) It is a piece of Blackwood about 10" wide x 2" deep, this is the only photo I have & it sold so this is it I guess. I managed to pick up a third place with it. C & C Welcome Pete

One leg vessel

Description}: THis is a Teak vessel supported on one leh, dimensions O/all height is 200mm, the vessel is 140mm x 50mm wide fixing by way of two copper rose head nails

Description}: This is the last of the Ethnic type pieces for a while. It is trying to represent our Koru in a Pounamu material (greenstone), which was a favourite material with the Maori carvers, it is a slightly stylised / streched version been carved & stained with a “blotchy” green dye, I have added some doodle pyro work around it with some dark red dye to help the embelishment. The bottom is just a bit of simple texture with a Paua dot. The Koru is the Maori symbol for new life. It give the appearance of having several cracks thru the piece, these are however gum / resin type streaks ( apart from the obvious hole in the bowl) Timber is Native Rimu, the finish is a laquer spray cut back & mop finished, the size is 10” x 2” deep. Any & all comments welcome

burn & carve lesson

Description}: I picked up a second hand Archer carver & had to have a play, unfortunately the hole in this piece of Pohutukawa went from skin deep to a blow out when hollowing. The top is burnt for a contrast, the side is a Celtic knot carved & burnt, highlights are a burgandy acrylic, Comments appreciated
