Fossilized Bones of an Ancient Vaaaze

Description}: I did this piece after watchingStewart Mortimer turn at the Utah symposium. Since my carving leaves much to be desired I decided that it looked more like bones than a nice even spiral vase, thus the fossilized bones of an ancient vaaaze title.

Description}: I did this piece after seeing Alan Carter's work. It is an interesting piece that combines several techniques. Since it has no apparent purpose we jokingly call it the Object de Art.

Description}: This set of salt and pepper shakers were inlayed with silver solder wire and Inlace. The salt is birch and the pepper is walnut.

Description}: This is a walnut duck call embellished with two pewter rings. I probably should have done threee rings to give it a more balanced look, but it is a "learning piece" and two was where I stopped!

Birch pot with pyrography, texturing and color

Description}: This is a small birch pot that I embellished with sandhill cranes. These birds spend a month every spring in the Platte valley where I live. It isan amazing sight to see thousands of these prehistoric birds in the air. Thus they show up as a theme in many of my pieces.

Sandhill Crane bowl

Description}: I was turning this bowl from a piece of "dunno" wood. Sandhill cranes gather by the hundreds of thousands in the Platte River valley for several weeks in the spring and huge flocks were circling over my shop while I was turning. The sound is incredible and I was inspired to memorialize those cranes on my bowl.

Spalted mulberry bowl

Description}: The spalting in this little bowl was a surprise. It is a delight to see what the wood reveals! I added a pyrography border to give added interest. Size: 4" X 1 1/4"

Hollow form

Description}: This is the hollow form that I struggled with when the tenon kept snapping off. After much struggling I have it completed. The bowl is a piece of spalted boxelder and the collar is bloodwood with a very narrow piece of black veneer on the bottom of the collar. Finish is lots of coats of danish oil.

Wee Bowl

Description}: This is a small (3" X 2") bowl made from apricot wood. It is quickly becoming one of the favorite bowls in the house for snacks and such.
