The Oak crotch developed a stress crack as soon as I started roughing it out, so I marked the faceplate position carefully then removed it. In the same area as the faceplate had been, I screwed on a piece of MDF about 18&quot; square then raised the radial arm saw to cut the Oak but not the MDF, cut out the cracked area and glued in the Mahogany accent stripe. Then remounted the face plate and finished turning. The pores of the Oak have been filled with black tinted pore filler, then 8 coats of Minwax antique oil finish. Fred Klapp did a demo at our club in March 2009 and demonstrated this finish, he had been using the wine goblet he turned for several years and the finish had proved impervious. This wood seems to crack almost as fast as you can carry it in from cutting it! I turned it immediately, it's a very hard wood, dulls tools very quickly even green. It was allowed to dry (and crack)for about a month till the weight stabilized. Then I filled the cracks with epoxy mixed with contrasting colour earth pigment. Then returned sanded and finished with 2 coats Minwax antique oil, allowed to cure for a week then 3 coats of Target coatings EM2000WVX for a hard glossy food safe finish.
