Lost wood turning process refers to a technique that removes a predetermined amount of wood from a turning after it comes off the lathe to transform it into a different shape; It now has an elongated oval shape like a football. I’ve seen vases that were made this way. The wood is the most figured African mahogany I’ve ever found, and it was given to me for free. This bowl was 18” square before I cut it; I used oak as the sacrificial wood. Now it measures: 11” wide, 18” long and 4” high The other materials in this bowl are: Yellowheart and Corian. The finish is Tung oil and Wax. This bowl was made using stacked ring lamination (a bowl from a board), It has 5 layers; at 7/8" thick each. No wasted wood here, it was way to nice to turn it into sawdust. I'm adding this one to my personal collection.

4 comments http://www.woodturnersresource.com/wrphotopost/showphoto.php?photo=7307&title=lost-wood-vessel&cat=500 http://www.woodturnersresource.com/wrphotopost/showphoto.php?photo=7307&title=lost-wood-vessel&cat=500 Mon, 09 Mar 2009 23:26:28 +0000 The PHI bowl

by: MarkPlacek

Description}: This bowl has a heartwarming story behind it. I have for the past year given my bowls to local charities. The "PHI" bowl was made in honor of a local High School student killed in an automobile accident two weeks prior to graduation. His Father took upon himself to finish a project his son started in School, building a hands-on Art Courtyard. After getting to know this boys Father, I decided to make a bowl which reflected his sons most passionate interest; Greek Mythology, hence this bowl is the Greek letter "PHI". The bowl is made from Yellowheart and Wenge, It measures 18" x 14" x 3.5". Hand rubbed Teak oil for the finish. I gave it to his Parents in November 2007. This bowl held so much meaning for them, I felt that they needed to keep it for themselves.

4 comments http://www.woodturnersresource.com/wrphotopost/showphoto.php?photo=6073&title=the-phi-bowl&cat=500 http://www.woodturnersresource.com/wrphotopost/showphoto.php?photo=6073&title=the-phi-bowl&cat=500 Thu, 22 May 2008 02:08:53 +0000 Square Bowl in a Bamboo Forest

by: MarkPlacek

Description}: Here is one of my older turnings. This one was made for friends in Tennessee. They live a few miles from the Great Smokey Mountains National Park. The Timber Bamboo was planted by them. I happened to find two bamboo shoots exactly 20 inches apart to hold the bowl perfectly. I found this to be a very interesting place to photograph the bowl. It measures: 20"x 20"x 6" and is made from: Purpleheart, Bubinga,Padauk,Wenge, Zebrawood and framed in Canarywood. The finish is hand rubbed Teak oil. I made this bowl in September 2006.

3 comments http://www.woodturnersresource.com/wrphotopost/showphoto.php?photo=6071&title=square-bowl-in-a-bamboo-forest&cat=500 http://www.woodturnersresource.com/wrphotopost/showphoto.php?photo=6071&title=square-bowl-in-a-bamboo-forest&cat=500 Wed, 21 May 2008 00:49:11 +0000 Slotted Tulipwood bowl

by: MarkPlacek

Description}: This bowl is the highlight of my work so far. It was made in January 2007. The wood used is: Tulipwood, Padauk,Wenge and Yellowheart. The bowl measures 17" x 21" x 4" After turning, the bowl was cut on the band saw and is held together by the Yellowheart. The dark lines are 1/4" spaces in the bowl. The finish is hand rubbed Teak oil. I look forward to your comments. This bowl was the key to my acceptance into the delMano Gallery in Los Angeles.

12 comments http://www.woodturnersresource.com/wrphotopost/showphoto.php?photo=6068&title=slotted-tulipwood-bowl&cat=500 http://www.woodturnersresource.com/wrphotopost/showphoto.php?photo=6068&title=slotted-tulipwood-bowl&cat=500 Mon, 19 May 2008 15:00:44 +0000
