Gambel Oak HF

Description}: This is turned from Gambel Oak, roughed about mid October and finished the day after Christmas. I was really hoping it might hold up even though it's oak. But no such luck. It has already warped enough that the lid won't fit and is developing some small cracks around the opening. But I took a pic before it distorted. The finial is walnut ebonized with black ink. It's about 5" x 9"

N E Box Elder ornaments

Description}: These are from scrap cutoffs of box elder burl. Two have walnut handles, 1 has gambel oak handle. All are about 7" x <2". You can't see them in the pics but they have a small brass jingle bell hanging inside.

Cottonwood bowl with antler inlay

Description}: This is an experiment I tried. The bowl is a pretty plain piece of cottonwood, a big heavy thing 11.5" diameter with really thick sides. I cut a groove about 3/8" deep into the rim and glued in some short pieces of deer antler. Then I filled in the gaps with a mixture of coffee grounds and titebond glue mixed up to about the consistency of toothpaste. I rubbed it into the gaps like grouting tile. Then when it dried a couple days I turned away the excess. It was almost impossible to turn with regular tools. I found a scraper worked best but still only kept and edge for about 2 seconds. I tried to apply too much pressure once and it shattered the trailing edge of the antler pieces. So I had to just lightly cut away at it sharpening every few seconds of turning. It took about 90 minutes to remove 1/8" of the antler and get it flush with the wood. It smelled like the dentist grinding away on a tooth. The antlers were from several small pieces, mostly tips, and had a lot different consistency in the different pieces. Some were real pourous, some almost like solid rock. I might try this again but if I do I'll either get some kind of carbide tipped scraper and see if it works better or else some kind of grinder disc.

Cottonwood bowl with Chokecherry twig inlay

Description}: I did another cottonwood bowl with a ring of inlay. This one is inlaid with chokecherry twigs and filled with coffee. The cracks are also filled with coffee. The bowl is a form that I've always liked but never been able to get one that looks very good, still trying. The wood is from an endgrain log, pith down the center. It's weathered cottonwood that was standing dead and all the bark was off. It was almost perfectly round to begin with so the color in the wood is just barely underneath the gray outside surface of the log. It's 11" x 7.5", the walls start out at 7/16" thick and end up about 7/8" thick in the bottom.

Description}: This is from a piece of fruit cherry that a friend gave me. It has some awesome color and figure. The knots are filled with a coffee-CA mix. Unfortunately the lid cracked, being endgrain with the pith in the center, so I filled it with black dyed epoxy. The finial is rosewood. 11" tall, 4.5" wide, with Deft semigloss lacquer.

Description}: This is another winged natural edged bowl from a walnut crotch branch. It's about 12" at the widest point and 2.5" tall. I was able to keep most of the bark on this one with the help of a lot of CA.

Description}: This is a piece of cottonwood that has a little bit of cracking, some spalting, a couple nail holes, some crotch wood, and some of that chatoyance type stuff. It's just under 12" diameter, 4" tall.

Walnut Natural Edge Winged Bowl

Description}: Walnut winged bowl from a small crotch. The limb growing out the side had been cut or broke off at some time and the tree grew back around it. It's about 12" corner to corner, 2.5" tall, the bark was gone the second I turned the lathe on. Oil and lacquer finish.

Box Elder and Cocobolo pedestal box

Description}: This is Box Elder burl with a finial and base made from Cocobolo. The grain and color in the Cocobolo clashed with the grain in the Box Elder so I hit it with some black dye. You can still see a little of the grain but only if you look close. It's 10" tall, 4" dia, lacquered.

Description}: It doesn't seem right to be posting these in September. Anyway, l. to r. maple and walnut, cherry and walnut, another cherry and walnut, oak and walnut, and a goofy upside down one of walnut and maple. All are about 6" x 2.5", give or take a little. All have 26 pieces of wood.

Olive Box

Description}: This is a small Olive box, 3" x 2", with a Briwax finish. The joint between the box and lid is hidden with some parting tool grooves, and there are some on top and and inside the lid too. Try not to notice the lint in the grooves. This is another one of the things that mysterious stranger, Chris Wright taught me to turn.

Description}: I found some real nice Box Elder burl on a dead tree that was being torn out on a construction site. I went back that night and got all I could before my saw ran out of gas (forgot to take the gas can). The next night I went to get more and it had been hauled off. But I got a couple pretty nice burls. This is a lidded box from a piece of one of them. It's 8" tall by 4.5" diameter. The rim inside the box and around the lid, and the finial are dyed somethingorother wood.

Osage Orange Spider

Description}: There's a local art center that is having a show and the theme is "3 Legs or More", open to any medium. Don't really know what made me think of a spider when I thought of "3 Legs or More", but this is what I came up with. It's mostly Osage Orange with some small pieces of redheart. It's all turned pieces (40 pieces) with a little bit of carving on the mouth and the front claws. It stands about a foot tall and is about 14" diameter. The body is just an egg, the head is a hollow form with the opening carved out for the mouth and the inside painted with india ink, there's a redheart tongue in the mouth, the rest is just spindles. It's all joined by tenons. If you notice, She's even wearing a couple bracelets.

Description}: Left is Tasmanian Blackwood bell with African Blackwood handle. It has an Osage Orange clapper inside. Right is and inside out Walnut with an Osage Orange spindle in the center. Both are about 5" x 1.75", give or take a little.

Fruit Cherry HF

Description}: This is from a piece of fruit cherry, Lambert I think, that had a punky dead branch imbedded in the wood. I tried all kinds of things to stabilize the punky wood but it still just crumbled out. So I decided to use the rough crumbled area as an "enhancement" and just left it rough. The punky area is soaked with CA and then it was finished with Danish Oil. 6" x 6"

Walnut and Antler box

Description}: This is a small walnut box, 5.5" tall x 2" diameter, that I tried a couple new (for me) things on. Last week I stopped at a yard sale and bought a box of antler pieces and about a pound of turquoise for 5 bucks. So the finial is made from a very small deer antler and the bark pocket in the walnut has a little crushed turquoise glued into it with CA.

Description}: these wood be close enough to score. I had my first (and probably my last) commission, to turn two matching goblets from opposite woods. Walnut with Ash celtic knot, Ash with Walnut celtic knot. If you measure the lengths, diameters, etc they're pretty close. But the shapes, especially in the cups, are different. They're just over 6" tall by 2" diameter.

Eucalyptus goblet

Description}: This is a goblet I made as a wedding gift for a niece that's getting hitched in a few weeks. It's eucalyptus with some light sapwood and two interlocked captive rings. 6 1/2" tall and just under 2" diameter. The pic is kind of dark but it's some nice wood.

Goldfield Burl bowl

Description}: I bought this burl from Macbeath's Hardwoods in SLC and it was in a box labeled "Goldfield Burls". I know it's one of the exotic Australian burl woods but I don't know which one. It's about 11" diameter and 3" tall. It's the first one of these burls I've ever gotten to turn. I wanted to keep as much of the outer burl untouched as I could so I turned a shallow recess into the bottom and made a base from rosewood. The rest of the bottom is all natural. On the top I figured if I tried to turn it flat I would lose some of the burl features that stuck out from the sides so I turned the bowl in the center and then just sanded the outside areas to the contour of how the blank had been cut and dried. That why the top is sort of wavey. Top, side, and bottom view.

Description}: This is a bowl from a piece of black locust crotch wood. 12.5" x 3.5" finished with tung oil. This is the second bowl I've turned using the DNA process for getting the wood dried out quicker. I think I like how it works.

Silver Maple Bowl with some birdseys figure

Description}: 12" x just under 4" maple bowl. This wood was cut green in Feb and rough turned. Soaked in Denatured Alcohol for a few days and then dried in a paper sack for a month and finish turned. So far no warps or cracks. Finished with walnut oil.

For the Birds

Description}: This is a birdhouse I turned for my entry in this year's birdhouse competition at the Ogden Nature Center. It was turned from some walnut logs that were cracked before turning and cracked a little more after. It's two pieces with the bottom glued into the top and a walnut perch also. The opening for the door is 1 5/8". After I had it done I had several suggestions including making the bottom removable from the top for cleaning. And I learned that different birds prefer a different sized opening. So I'm not sure if it will actually attract a bird family at all. It's 2 feet tall and 1 foot across the eaves. Because it's supposed to hang outside from Earth Day until Labor Day I finished it with Thompson water seal and then sprayed it with Helmsman Spar varnish over that. Next year's entry will be an "improved" model with a little more birdhouse research incorporated.
