Zebrawood Pendant

Description}: I've always had this inclination to make jewelry pieces. In continuation to explore wood and metal combinations, I decided to make pendants. Here's a custom order one of my clients dreamed up. Zebrawood with a "frosted" aluminum insert (hand turned off center on eccentric chuck) and a Jade acrylic cabochon. All 3 pieces were independently hand turned and then permanently adhered together. O.D.=2.75". Would like to hear your comments and critiques.

Mahogany and Pecan Cake Plate

Description}: How do you cover a 9" square cake using a round cake plate? It's simple, but you'll need a larger than normal dome! Doing the math revealed that the dome would have to be at least 12.75" diameter. But that would leave no room for the icing. Voila! Here's one I made using a 14" dome. The base is solid Honduran Mahogany with Pecan foot and accent. Should work very well, pending the cake is not too tall. Dimensions 15" wide and 4.5" tall. Finished with 4 coats of Waterlox. C&C always welcomed!

Description}: I love turning Box Elder. It's been a few months since I turned a bowl and couldn't resist this blank. This one had so much character (red flame veining, grey splashes, bug holes, curls, etc, etc). All natural, no stains. About 9" largest diameter. Finished with BLO. SOLD, but more are available.

Big Leaf Maple Burl Bowl Platter

Description}: So I decided to turn a scraggly piece of Big Leaf Maple Burl, and this is the result. It revealed so much figure and character- Birdseye, Spalting, Quilting, Rays galore, and a few bark inclusions. I think I'll donate this one to the LPB Art and Travel Auction for a PBS fundraiser. Photos show top, side, and bottom views. 10" x 2", finished with 4 coats of Waterlox matte luster. Can't wait to see what the other scraggly pieces reveal!

Cherry Jewelry Box

Description}: The body of this Jewelry Box was hand-turned from one solid block of Cherry wood. It features a ring holder on the inside that is actually part of the wood block. The earring carousel (mounted under the lid) was hand-turned from Mahogany and allows the user to store up to 6 pairs safely inside. Bracelets and necklaces can be either be stored inside or on the coved top of the lid. The finial is hand-turned using aluminum and features an Olivewood bead. It is approximately 8" tall from foot to finial and 4" diameter at the lid. It has been finished with multiple coats of friction polish and lightly buffed with Renaissance Wax. Cherry Burl HF

Description}: This hollow form was produced from a Cherry Burl section that was attacked by insects. I decided to experiment with filling the bug trails with an aluminum powder/CA glue mixture for aesthetics and stability. I had mixed emotions about the outcome of this one, until I turned the finial/cap from Aluminum and Ebony. Folks gravitated to this piece at 2 shows and it sold on the third attempt. Bloodwood Perfume Bottle

Description}: Here is a perfume bottle produced from Bloodwood, Canarywood, and Aluminum, all hand-turned on a wood lathe. The arched Canarywood top is removable to fill and clean the glass vial concealed inside the 1/2 moon shape. The perfume wand extends from the finial tip into the concealed vial and is threaded just below the bead to form an air tight seal. The unit is composed of 9 separately turned pieces. Pecan Winged Lidded Bowl w/ Solid Brass Finial

Description}: I always wanted to try one of these after viewing many that have been produced. This is a first of many more to come using Spalted Pecan lumber found after Hurricane Gustav (2008). Approximately 14" wingspan hollowed about 2.5" deep. Best guess on the height is 8" to top of solid brass finial. The finial was hand-turned on my woodlathe. Pecan Shaving Set

Description}: Had an idea to create a Louisiana gift item, so I decided to use Pecan wood salvaged after Hurricane Gustav (2008). The badger hair brush (top) and soap cup (bottom) have an uncirculated LA quarter fixed to seal the deal. This model uses the Mach3 blades. All wood came from the same blank. Wormy Flame Box Elder Vase

Description}: The bugs really did a number on this one, but left a "hole" lot of character in their wake. I wanted to create a more curved form, but the size of the blank and the size of the glass liner allowed me to only give it a slight taper with a bit more playing area with the foot. Aluminum Designer Pen

Description}: Introducing my first hand-turned metal pen, made from solid aluminum. I started with 5/8" rod stock and was able to hand-turn all of the external components, except for the clip. (I plan to eventually learn how to make my own clips later.) I also used the brass tubes, the swivel transmission, and the ink cartridge from the kit. The tip, center band, and cap have been brush sanded for the contrasting effect. The tip is compression fitted into the lower barrel. The center band is part of the upper barrel, but made to appear as though it is a separate piece. The clip retainer/cap is threaded into a separate piece that is compression fitted inside the upper barrel. I thoroughly enjoyed making this pen. It's been on my agenda since I started turning metals. I have lots of ideas about how to improve my technique. 5pc Executive Desk Set

Description}: A five piece executive desk set (pen, pencil, letter opener, magnifier, and clock) turned from the wood harvested from the Thomas Boyd Live Oak. This tree was one of the oldest Live Oaks in Louisiana (250+ years), until it was uprooted during Hurricane Gustav in 2008. Each piece finished with FP and RW after sanding to 12,000 grit. Maple Wing Form with Bloodwood and Aluminum Finial

Description}: This is my attempt at a wing form. Crotch Maple with subtle spalting. Inclusions were stabilized and filled using coffe grounds and CA. Finished with 3 coats of BLO. The finial is hand-turned from solid Aluminum with an ogee base profile and joined with a Bloodwood bead. First attempt at trying to turn these metal finials with more details involved. Pecan Vase with Brass Finial

Description}: I decided to try a different hollow form and finial style using 2-tone Pecan and Brass. I was fortunate to cut the blank to yield near equal amounts of heartwood and sapwood, thus providing a totally different looking vessel when rotated. The bead is also from the same blank and I decided to give it a somewhat oval shape to mimic the vase and to offset the concaveness of the finial. Overall height is about 10.5", width about 4". This Pecan tree fell in a homeboy's yard during Gustav (2008) and nearly destroyed his brand new home. As always, comments and critiques are much appreciated. www.perfectwoodworks.com

ExperiMetal

Description}: ExperiMetal- A play with words describing my continued experiments with hand-turning metals on my wood lathe. I've turned these 3 metals using a normal setup on my PM 3520 (no special tool rests or fixed cutters), and the EWT Mini Series Carbide Tools (Ci2m, Ci3m, and Ci4m). From left to right: Holly with Brass and a Holly bead, Cherry with Aluminum and a Masur Birch bead, Holly with Bronze and an Asian Ebony bead. The Aluminum and Brass alloys cut nicely. Getting long, loose curls and some chips with the Aluminum and very tight curls and chips with the Brass. The Bronze alloy is very hard and only getting chips. Had to do 3 times the amount of sanding on the Bronze to achieve this finish. Dry cut with tools (no lubricants), sanded starting with 180 grit through 1000, and micromeshed to 12,000 grit. Cherry Vase with Solid Aluminum Finial

Description}: I've been contemplating two ideas for a while; turning hollow forms and turning solid metal. Feeling bold, I decided to try out both ideas, in the same week. And here's what came out of it. The vase is Cherry(hybrid) that fell during Hurricane Gustav(2008 Louisiana). Hollowed to a consistent 3/16" wall thickness. The finial is solid aluminum, hand-turned on PM3520 using Easy Wood Tools Mini's(Ci2m,Ci3m,Ci4m). The bead is Masur Birch and is attached with 1/4" mortise and tenon joints. All 4 pieces were hand sanded to 600 grit and then micromeshed to 12,000. I really enjoyed this project and will attempt more in the near future, possibly incorporating other metals. I admit, metal turning by hand was a bit intimidating at first, but I think I managed to produce a quality piece. Scariest thing was the fear of getting metal chips in my VS Drive, so I covered it with a box for added protection. Comments, Critiques, and Questions are Welcomed. Thomas Boyd Live Oak Desk Set

Description}: The Thomas Boyd Live Oak was one of the largest Live Oaks in Louisiana until Hurricane Gustav uprooted it in 2008. It stood proudly on the Louisiana State Capitol grounds. This desk set was hand-crafted from a cross section of the tree. It measures about 10" long and 6" at its widest point. The clock holder and pen were turned and the base was hand sanded and finished with multiple coats of BLO. A lot of history in this piece, enabling the tree to live on in another form. Big Leaf Maple Emerging Bowls

Description}: A pair of emerging bowls produced from a Big Leaf Maple Burl. Both bowls measure 9"x9"x4.5". This piece started as a 9" cube, split in half, rejoined,and turned on 2 axes. Learned about this technique from Irwin Seidman. Very challenging and a true test of technique, equipment, and tooling. All turning done with the Ci1 Easy Rougher and Ci0 Easy Finisher carbide tools. Not a single catch... Whew! I used super strong double stick tape to keep the sections together as well as to hold them as a unit on the waste block. Lots of figure in these pieces including characteristic burl patterns, quilting, spalting, birdseye, insect trails, and natural edge with inclusions. Exotic Acornament

Description}: A functional acornament (acorn ornament) turned using Walnut for the cap, Poplar for the body, and Bloodwood for the bottom finial. It functions as a box with the idea that something is tied to the bottom of the cap and is stored in the body of the acorn. (see insert) Measures approximately 4.5" long. Walnut Bowl

Description}: I really enjoy turning these pens inlaid with metals. The Ci1 makes it a breeze. So far I have used Aluminum and Brass. Copper is next and maybe a few other "soft" metals. Flame Box Elder Vase

Description}: Here is a vase I turned as my payment for many pieces of this beautiful Box Elder. It stands approximately 12" and was hollowed with a 2-3/8" forstener bit. The glass insert fits perfectly with about 1/16" play, just in case the wood decides to move.
