How To Make The Clam Shell Bowl

Description}: Look at the picture in the larger view and you will see the lines I have drawn from the center going out. This helps me know where the high and low points are. Around the sides you can see the waves drawn on the woods that have been sandwiched and glued together. At this point only the outer area and inside tool shaping has been done. The next step is the fun hand work. This is Cedar and Sassafras both are soft woods so keep those tools Sharp when cutting.

Cedar and Sassafras Clam Shell

Description}: Layers of Cedar and Sassafras were used to create this clam shell look. This is not a wet or hot press that was used to create the ripple effect. The pattern is drawn out, the center if the first to be cut then time with a rasp is used to shape each wave. We have made these using solid woods as well as layers...each is a true beauty. This Clam Shell measures 17 inches across.

Walnut Bee Hive Bowl

Description}: Something different to try when you have a large HUNK of wood. We call these "Bee Hive Bowls" The inside is completely finished smooth. Cutting the outside was a lot of fun. We have made these using different types of wood. I like the walnut one here because of the grain pattern that can be seen.

Description}: Mimosa Bowl step turned. This mimosa bowl is 4 5/8 inches tall and 11 inches across at the top. Solid Mimost and not segmented just from a Very Large Mimosa trunk area.

Walnut and Pumpkin Ash Spiral Segmented

Description}: 12 is the lucky number to create this twin pair of segmented vases. What you are viewing is the front and the back side of the two tall vases. The Walnut used in the vaes give the look that they spin and cross around the vases going from the bottom to the top.
